I have been working with my Insteon Keypads (2486D) this week to reconfigure them for a new household setup, but am finding that I have NO CONTROL over them from PH when it comes to setting 6/8 button, the Toggle/non-toggle functionality, and the button light levels.
It is a mixture of both several year old Keypads and brand new ones (Jun 10).
The only way I seem to be able to change any of these parameters is by using the Keypad buttons themselves in accordance with the SmartHome documentation for the Keypads.
Is there something special one must do to get PH to achieve these functionality changes or has the Keypad firmware just gotten ahead of PH?

I believe it is the latter. PH manages those functions by setting device memory based on where the functions reside in device memory for a particular revision level or group of revision levels. There are Extended I2 commands for doing this now but PH has to support Extended commands before thinking about moving in that direction. Once the Extended commands are used then Smartlabs can change the internal arrangement all they want without affecting applications like PH and all other products that have the same exposure.
Also I think some devices may have to be power cycled before the memory changes can take effect. I know that to be true, just don't remember if KPLs fall into that category. Might try setting one of the KPL functions and then pull the air gap to power cycle the device to see if the changes are effective when the device comes back up.
When Dave comes up I’m sure he will have a more knowledgeable response.

Thanks Lee. That was kind of what I expected. Just added an EZIO2X4 to the system, to automate my garage doors and discovered that it writes all its links in high memory, but PH puts them in low memory. Thus ne'er the twain shall meet!
Had to link everything the old fashioned way with button presses.
We'll just have to keep feeding Dave all the coffee and doughnuts he needs to get this next (long awaited) release out.
He has been doing major re-writes of a large part of PH, but the results are going to be well worth the wait.

Ken, you can fix the link database problem by going to the Types tab under Insteon Explorer and change the Types entry you are using for the EZIO2X4, Mem Top column from 4096 to 16384. If you have multiple EZIO2X4s with different link database memory sizes then you have to define a new Types entry keeping one with the 4096 value and the other with 16384. I believe all the SHN devices being shipped today have internal PLMs with the larger memory. A Reinit is necessary for PH to pick up the new Mem Top value.

Well, like I always say "You learn something new every day."
Dang. never realized there was a Memory parameter in the device Types definitions. Not only did I change it to 16384, I changed it not from 4096, but from 0 which is what it was defaulted to!
I just re-initialized and was amazed to see what happened. Up to this time, the EZIO2X4 "Buttons" showed up as -1. I just did a Devices>Scan db and Refreshed my Links and Lo and Behold, things are looking like I expect them to!
Lee - you are BIGTIME da man!

Ken, glad that improved the situation. I've been playing with Insteon for many years and hardly a week goes by where some new piece of information surfaces or I find that something I thought worked one way for years turns out to work another. Part of what makes this fun!

You are sure right about that! Although retired, I am entertained many hours a week by the many challenges of PH. Although I don't know for sure, I suspect I have one of the most automated homes in Michigan. Gad! When the computer (running PH) goes down (fortunately rarely) life almost falls apart, as we are soooooo used to things happening automatically, and then all of a sudden we have to turn things on/off by ourselves. Bummer
We come down to Flordia every winter to escape the hardest part of MI weather, and always visit Dave just to catch up and give thanks for the wonderful product he has created!
I hope that he appreciates how many lives he has enriched with his extraordinary efforts!

Oh my bearded friend does it again. He is my mentor… Ph has been the best thing since sliced bread as I have been playing in the field since 74. We have definitely come along ways. Speaking of retired, I think a few of us fit in that category but we are having fun and will continue at it. Since you are a Snow Bird you might think about coming to the Pan Handle as we have the best beaches in Florida. I don’t expect Lee to visit as he is stuck on his north 40 in Eastern North Carolina.

Pete - I'm trying to think back when I got my first X-10 device. To the best of my recall it was in the 74-76 timeframe too. We certainly have come a long way with Insteon, which has been remarkably reliable. We have a 5000 sq ft home on a 200 acre farm with many outside barns. Insteon reaches it all and has allowed me to control home, barn, yard, and outside devices in ways I never dreamed of, and most awesomely in places that were not wired for lighting and have no switches. The Insteon 'virtual' switch does the job just fine, thank you very much.
Thanks for the Panhandle invite. We usually head way south to the Keys, then follow the warming weather and work our way up to Sarasota, then Ocala all where we have friends.
We bring our Honda GoldWing motorcycle down in our toyhauler RV so that we can get an early start on quality riding, way before possible here in the North. Here we are in Ocala.
I figured you were probably retired too, when Lee referred to you as his "gray haired" friend. I'd qualify too, except there isn't any hair up there to be gray!
Keep up the good work, with all your great posts!

Ken, I still have some of those BSR brown X-10 modules. I have seen controllers come and go over the years but it took a long time before we had a true software solution. I still run some X-10 but mostly Insteon. I have some areas Insteon will not work no matter what I do. So I use Leviton X-10 as they have a very reliable receiver that filters out noise. So when you are on the road do you play with gadgets remotely or do you terrorize the RV camps with strange signals?

Huumm! Hadn't thought of terrorizing the RV parks!
I've been pretty good, but have been known to hack a park's wireless system in order to get it working correctly. They are generally set up by ding-bats with little system knowledge!
I do monitor the home extensively. I have 4 live video feeds streaming to the web I can monitor, and get instant SMS messages on my iPhone if motion is detected by any camera. Also monitor all freezer temps and get alerts, and can control the HVAC system, lighting, and arm/disarm the security system if someone needs to get in.
So, in general, I do have fun

I was an itinerant entrepreneur, computer scientist, and inventor. I have designed two computers and been on the design team for others including the first automotive engine computers.
I was an early pioneer in the design and development of Word Processing systems (I believe I was the first to utilize 'double clicking' to define words/sentences/paragraphs); developed some of the first auto-attendant/voice messaging systems; designed some of the first internet high-speed communications hardware; worked in the development of high capacity disk drives; created one of the most advanced material handling conveyance systems ever developed (a robotic train system that automatically picked up, sorted, and delivered package and luggage items); and built the 5th largest company in the US producing Mortgage Closing documents nationwide via the web. I have 6 patents and boundless enthusiasm still!
Now I direct my inventiveness to home automation, RV improvements, and world travel resulting in feature length hi-def video travelogue productions.
I'm still having lots of fun. Thanks for asking.
