Dave,
I have a Simply Automated USB UPB PIM and cannot get it to work through PowerHome 2 using any of the com port values 1 thru 16 (BTW - your validation on this field caused program to hang outside of these bounds).
I am able to access all of my functions/devices through Upstart. I was also able to get past error "no device found for UPB PIM" and import all of my devices etc.. into PowerHome 2 but after that, I cannot get past error "cannot open comX as port already open. commands will not be sent" (phrasing off top of my head).
I am hoping you can give me a fix or help me with some workaround to make this work. I am definitely going to implement this if I can get it working and also have plans to code new modules for various things (sprinklers, etc..).
I consider myself a test bed for automation and continue spending $ in this area along with helping others in home automation.
Last note: Do you have plans for ZWAVE going forward?
Thanks for you help!!

I apologize if this is a stupid question but only 1 application can open a given com port. Is it possible that something else has already opened that com port before PH2 gets to it.

Lee,
Not a stupid question
In this case, we tried opening all physical com ports 1 thru 16 on the system and get the same error message every time.
As this is USB (virtual com port)that uses the default driver in Windows XP to do USB to Serial enumeration (with HID registration), no matter what I do to move the USB around to re-enumerate the virtual com port, I cannot get a match in PH2 to physical com port number.
I believe that PH2 needs to implement full USB interface so that it can detect Simply Automated USB UPB PIM just as the Upstart program has implemented. Before Upstart implemented USB support, I was able to get this program to talk thru com4 to my USB device.
As stated previously, I have no problems using Upstart to control my devices.
Last note: I am starting to wonder if the message coming back from PH2 is generic and that some other value I have set is wrong when it tries to communicate out the port to my PIM.
I appreciate any and all help on this. Would love to use this program and get my sprinklers, blinds, etc.. implemented through software versus my hardware timer.
Thanks,
Warren (AutoFanatic)

OK - now it’s my turn for a stupid question. Have you been to this thread?

Pete,
Again, not a stupid question and thanks for the pointer to this thread. I did not see this as I did not go back far enough in forum time frame.
As far as this topic is concerned, yes this is what I am facing and this thread did not give a solution except to use a serial based UPB PIM and a given manufactured driver for the conversion (USB to Serial) which maps a com port.
All of my 64bit systems: Gateway, HP, Dell, Sony and Dell laptops do not have serial ports built in so I do not see any com port info in device manager (XP, Vista, Windows 7). All I see are USB controllers and HID entries.
So, I guess my question is now in response to Dave's message (9/16/08) that he would handle "automating this in a future version of the wizard" for USB detection and not have to play games/workarounds for USB/UPB PIMs.
I really want to use this software, help in support, and share ideas/code but do not want to have to purchase older legacy hardware to get this to work.
I am hoping that I can get something soon as I am in the process of Rain8 UPB (old and new) automation, Somfy blind automation (UPB to RTS), swimming pool/spa lighting and pump automation, security system integration and then tying it all into IPAD (as soon as they fix all of their bugs) either myself or through someone I would support. ;-)
Again, appreciate any help in UPB category! (with forward thinking about UPB/ZWAVE next step).
Thanks,
Warren

Well this is turning into an interesting challenge. Would something like the usb2com converter work? Information on it can be found here: http://www.gossenmetrawatt.com/english/produkte/usb2com.htm
