I have 2 very simple timed events set up: turn on all outside lights (3 of them) at sunset, and turn them off at 11 pm. Some days they work fine, others they don't work at all or only one of them works--for instance, today they came on fine, but didn't shut off. When I check the event log, it shows that the macro was executed, and in device status it shows the lights as off (I didn't have scan devices enabled). However, all the lights are still on. I can control them directly through the device status page.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like it may be communication problems. X10 or Insteon?

It sounds like you are having signal problems. Either a weak signal (a long distance between the PLC and the lights or something is "sucking" the signal off the wires) or electical noise, or a combination of both. Here are some things to try:

1. Turn on PLC Group Cleanup: This forces the PLC to walk through the list after it has done a group On/Off and send an individual command to each device. If I understand right, these commands get repeated up to three times or till an Ack or Nck is received back from the device, where the goup on/off don't (please correct me if I'm wrong on this). Additionally, the PLC is supposed to retry a certain number of times if it doesn't get an ACK. Doing this is like shouting in a noisy room. It gets the job done, but if the real problem is noise, it doesn't get better. But if the problem is a weak signal, it will help. Note you may need to add more SignalLincs or devices to get the signal repeated.

2. Look for sources of electical noise and or signal "suck". Sources can be those brick transformers that are so popular on things today, A/V equipment, computers, UPSs, florescent lights, low voltage lights, and some motors. Powerstrips and X10 devices may cause signal "suck". When you find these "offenders", either eliminate them if possible, or install filters so their signal doesn't make it back to the power lines.

From a diagnostic point of view, Dave has already given you some of the best tools available. Turn off/disable as many of those potential problems as possible. Clear Comms on the Device Maint tab and save. Turn on Status Scan and set the poll interval to 10 seconds. Observe the Overall Comm results over a period of time. Screenshot the report and turn on a potential problem maker and repeat Clear the Comms again and then observe the results and compare them to the original. If you see a jump in the number of event03s and NAKs, you've found a problem and need to filter it. Don't forget the loads that are on the insteon switches as well. They too can be a source of the problems.

Good Luck!

P.S. I just had a problem last night. Turned out to be the DC motor on the treadmill my wife was using at the time. I'll be ordering a filter for that as soon as I can find a big enough one to handle the load.

I'm all Insteon. About 20 dimmers/relays.
