The last few attempts at using the software has resulted in the software freezing "not responding". I not sure where to start looking for the issue since I only have a PLM and a insteon wall switch.
My system:
AMD dual core 64 4200
2G ram
XP

That is far from normal.
Which version of PH are you running? Was it a clean install or an upgrade?

I'm running the trail of version 2.1 (the latest) which is a clean install.

Version 2.1b is the latest. Under Control, select PowerHome Status. Leave this display active until PH freezes. The top System Status pane displays the time PH and the operating system have been running. The two time values update in real time. When the freeze occurs, do both of these times stop being updated? In the lower pane is the Event Log. What are the last entries shown when the freeze occurs.

Does it freeze initially after installing or did it occur after you made changes to the setup?

Let’s take if further. Was this before or after the controller was defined? If so does disabling (active box) the controller help?

I have done what you have requested before and the program run time stops on average 30 minutes and the computer keeps going. But today it is non-responsive such that the windows will not open up at the same time I'm running a data feed for trading (which is the first time any program has been running with PowerHouse). The entries in the lower pane are shutdown and startup.
I think I will uninstall the a version and install the b.

Sounds good. Do a clean uninstall and then delete the PH folder.

I did as you instructed but version b only lasted 53 minutes and 4 seconds before freezing. Also the windows uptime froze.
One thing that I may have to post elsewhere, is that the plm scans for devices every 6 - 8 seconds. When it does this I can not do anything else with the software. Would this have any bearing on the not responding issue?

Try going to Insteon Explorer and stopping the scan. If the scan is creating a problem we may be having a PLM issue. While in Insteon Explore go check the devices and see if anything is shaded red. Like I said if you uncheck the Controllers Active box in Setup does it still lock up?

Is your PC otherwise "clean" and stable? Do you use anti-virus? anti-spyware? Is your XP updated to SP3? Do you have any TSRs running that you don't know about?
I strongly suggest downloading this utility
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
it's a control panel that shows you all the programs that run at startup. Many stay resident. if you have more than 1/2 dozen or so, or any you don't understand (after googling them), your PH issues may be a symptom of a different cause.

I restarted Powerhome and disconnected the plm (software wise) while viewing the status & Insteon explorer windows. This ran over night for over 8 hours without freezing. I connected the plm and I noticed something different. Previously, during the plm scan of devices the powerhome uptime would freeze in the status window and then update to the correct time. But during the last test, the powerhome uptime updated correcting in real time during the plm scan. I was optimistic at this point but 30 minutes later powerhome became non-responsive. I never saw any red field in the Insteon explorer during this last test.
One other note, the com port is stuck open after I close Powerhome which means I have to reboot the computer to correct it.

The reason I suggested we may have a PLM problem because I have seen the same symptom when PH cannot communicate with the PLM. PH will appear to be locked up and will end in an endless loop. I currently use a USB to Serial connecter so I can’t address the com port not closing. I was able to detect the communication problem by going to Insteon Explorer and observing the log. That was if I could get in. If there is a PLM problem you might do a hard reset and re-plug the PLM.

I only use this computer for two things: 1. Trading which has a high data feed and charting (runs 24 hours a day). 2. Home automation - only Powerhome.
I have tested the issue by running both software packages together and separately. I have no issues running the trading software for 24 hours / 5 days at a time.
This was a clean install of XP as I didn't want any issues of viruses, unknown resident programs, etc... My cpu usage at the worst times is 20%. I know and have very little resident programs running on the machine. I do all my other computing on three other linux computers.

I too am using a serial to USB convertor. I will try to view the log and do the hard reset of the plm.

I have had PLM issues with a serial to USB converter. They're not created equal. Check to make sure you have the latest driver for the converter you have. I had to change out my converter to get the PLM to work reliably. What you describe doesn't sound like a PH issue but a PC port or PLM communication issue.
