I've found several free, hosted Wiki sites...

http://pbwiki.com

http://www.wikidot.com

http://www.wikispaces.com

http://atwiki.com

http://wikihost.org

http://www.wikia.com

http://wiki.zoho.com

There also seem to be many free wiki packages.

I agree a WIKI would allow the users to update and help with documentation, depending on Daves hosting opions it can be hosted here and not by a 3rd party.

ok, this may be a dumb question but why did you register a new domain (.info) just for the wiki? I would have figured a fully intergrated soloution, all at your .com ..... Also is this a subdomain of your current hosting plan?

Heh,

Good question. I originally was trying to take the quick way out by downloading some ASP based wiki software (the current power-home.com site is Windows and ASP based) including the one suggested by Tonyno above (ScrewTurn). I couldnt get any of them to work properly so I took a slower approach and researched various wiki software options, hosting, etc. and found that the most popular wiki packages were Linux based rather than Windows based.

I finally decided to use MediaWiki (same engine used by Wikipedia) and started looking for Linux hosting options. I finally settled on SiteGround for general web hosting (supposedly, their servers are also optimized for wiki hosting) since they had good reviews and decent prices ($5.95 a month). The plan is to see how everything goes and I may end up moving the entire PowerHome to site to them. Since this is a different hosting company, I needed another domain and wanted it similar to the current domain and thought that power-home.info made sense. Since SiteGround's package included a free domain registration, I just went with that.

Sooo, long story short, the PowerHome wiki is readily available MediaWiki software (and not a closed solution like some dedicated wiki options) and contained within a MySQL database that can be exported and moved should I decide to change hosting companies.

Your current hosting package doesn't come with Wiki installable software? I offer hosting myself, and all packages come with "fantastico" which in that, has more then one wiki pakage you can install for free. Where I host other accounts with a business partner, on a different hosting company then mine is based, offers the same packages. Either way, I'm just happy to see it... I'm sure it will help you with sales Dave!

Brian,

Welcome back!

Yep, the main PowerHome page is hosted with 1and1 and they don't currently offer any wiki options (at least their Windows packages...the Linux ones may however).

SiteGround (where the PowerHome Wiki resides) also comes with Fantastico, although I didnt use it for the MediaWiki installation. Ive always been a "Windows" guy so always shied away from Linux hosting. We'll see if I do an about face in a couple of months .

The wiki is definately cool. I added a little more to it today. There's just so much to add, it's overwhelming on where to start. So if anyone needs a something documented, just drop a note and I'll do it on the wiki.

Dave.
