Hi Guys. This may be a duplicate of a reply I tried to send in another topic. If so, I apologize. I just purchased an EZIO8SA kit and the PLM it came with is a SHN EZICOMM #5010K. I have been completely unsuccessful in linking this PLM to my 2413U. The set button method fails with the EZICOMM showing a red led at the end of the sequence. PH2 V.2.1.4 will not allow me to drag and drop in the links tab, it just shows the red circle with an X, and link creation in the SHN Utility Suite looks lke it's working but the new link doesn't show up after a read. The SHN utility does show there are 16 links, 8 as responder and 8 as controller. The addresses and data are completely bogus and even though the utility says it is deleting them, they do not go away. I CAN control the relays through the utility. In PH, I can drag and drop other devices to the EZIO but the link status stays in "Flagged Create". I spoke to SHN tech support and they're blaming PH for sending extended commands and ignore the fact that neither the set button nor their utility will create links either. BTW, they don't claim the utility as being "theirs", they say a customer wrote it. I'm supposed to return this EZICOMM and they'll send me an I2CS one. Since I think this PLM is defective, I plan on returning it but I wonder if PH will like the I2CS version? The command that the Utility Suite is sending to turn relay #1 on is To ID:1E.7F.1F flags:3 cmd1:48 cmd2:1. In PH I tried ph_insteonwithret("EZIO8SA", 48, 1) but all it did was make the EZICOMM buzz for a second. I noticed that the utility had Flags:3 in the message but PH had Flags:5. I couldn't find any way to change the flags in PHs message. What is the Flags for and how would I send the command to the EZIO8SA?
Hopefully you gurus won't mind answering a couple more questions to help educate me! In the links tab of PH, what are the Group and Button tabs for? I think the group is for multifunction devices like the EZIOXX to tell the device which function we are addressing. I also believe it is not related to the PLM groups. Is that all correct? If so, do we need to create a link for each function on the multi function device? The Button column has me completely baffled! Some devices demand that the button be a certain number while others seem not to care (if memory serves correctly). In both the Controller and Responder panes of the link tab, for each row there are Ctlr Link Status and Resp Link Status columns. Do these verify that the link is written to both the controller and responder device databases? If so, what happens when only one of them is verified and the other is listed as Flagged Create or Checking? When you have a device that is going to send to PH such as a motion detector, is it necessary or advisable to create a link with the PH PLM showing the Motion Detector as controller and the PLM as responder? One last question at least for now . In my links tab, some of my devices have controller and/or responder links listed with an ID and Description of [ID NOT FOUND]. These devices have addresses that look like real Insteon devices but they are not any of my devices. Sometimes the links are even listed as verified. Does anybody know what these could be and is it okay if I delete them?
Thanks for your help and willingness to impart of your knowledge and experience, I really appreciate it!
Dean

The SHN Utility Suite was written by an SHN employee that is no longer there. I added some function, such as PLM support, years ago so when the original author left SHN I have been supporting the SHN Utility informally ever since.
The first thing to look at is under the Types tab, check the Mem Top column for the EZIO8SA. It should be either 8192 or 16384 depending on the PLM chip and firmware they shipped in the EZIComm. To determine the value that should be used, factory reset the EZIComm/EZIO8SA to clear the link database. Do a Set button link between the EZIComm/EZIO8SA and some other Insteon device. Use the SHN Utility to read the EZIComm/EZIO8SA link database. First specify Medium when reading the link database. If the Set button link is read the Mem Top should be 8192. If the link record does not show using Medium, repeat the Display using Large. If the Set button link shows with Large Mem Top should be 16384.
Under Devices tab the IEngine for the EZIO8SA should be Legacy.
If you do replace the current EZIComm with an I2CS version then the IEngine should be I2CS and Mem Top should be 8192.
As far as sending the Relay command, remember the numbers you see in the SHN Utility are in Hex. PH2 requires the values be in decimal. 0x48 would be decimal 72.
A link that is labeled anything other than Verified should be assumed not to exist.
Links with an ID NOT FOUND contain an Insteon address for which there is no Device entry. Sometimes Smarthome will ship a device with links. It is a good idea to factory reset a device before installing it. These can be deleted unless PH2 is missing a device definition.
If a device is going to send to PH as in the motion sensor case it must be linked to the PH PLM.

After a couple of months, I'm finally getting back to this. I did send the original Ezicomm PLM back to Smartenit for replacement and they sent me back a single band device that has no markings on it at all except for the Insteon address. This one at least has no strange links showing up, responded to PH Auto Detect and will link with other devices in the links tab...except for the 2413U. When I drag devices to link with the EZIO8SA the cursor turns into the red circle with the white X but after I release the mouse button the device does appear, lets me enter group and button numbers, saves and the link status changes to verified. When dragging the 2413U to either the controller or responder window of the EZIO8SA, the cursor changes into the red circle but it does not "stick" as other devices do. Lee, I set the memory top as you suggested and set the IEngine to I2CS (after Auto Discovery it auto populated with I2). I'm not understanding why PH appears to create links between the EZIO8SA and other devices but not the 2413U. Help solving this would be greatly appreciated. The EZIO8SA is basically useless if I can't control it with PH.
Thanks,
Dean

Using the set buttons, I was able to link the EZIO8SA to 2413U, or at least the SHN Utility says there is a link both as a controller and a responder. However very little in Power Home has changed. In the Links tab of the Insteon Explorer I can create links between the EZIO and other devices such as switchlinks, keypadlinks, etc. in their proper roles as controllers or responders, but still no luck linking the EZIO and the 2413U. One change is that the cursor, when dragging and dropping, is now a clipboard instead of the X. I really need to get this working and have no idea as to where to go now.

What is the current issue with linking the EZIO8SA to the PH modem 2413U now that the clipboard Icon appears?

The links don't appear and are never created. For example, If I have the EZIO8SA selected as the current device and try to drag the PLM into either the controller or responder area, even though the clipboard appears, when I release the mouse button, the controller or responder area remains empty. It is the same as if I were to try to drag an ApplianceLink into the controller pane of a LampLink. I just tried it again and the clipboard curser is gone and the X is back. I haven't changed anything in PH and the cursor is the X no matter what device is the current device and no matter what device I try to add to either the controller or responder panes. However it doesn't seem to matter whether the cursor is a clipboard or the X - PH seems to create, or not create, links the same in either case.

Not sure what help I can offer here. I select an EZIO8SA (device type 31273 - EZIO8SA Input/Output Controller) as the Current Device and drag/drop the PH PLM (device type 2412SH - PowerLinc Modem Serial HL2) onto both the Controller and Responder areas of the Link tab. I get Red entries in both areas that need the various information filled in about Button and Group.
Your PLM is not likely a 2412SH as they no longer sell those. What is the Device Type of the PH PLM and what are the values for Ctlr Groups, Resp Groups, and is PowerLinc column checked?

Lee, as usual you were right on! My PLM is a 2413U but the device type was set as "AutoDetect". There isn't a 2413U device type defined in PH so I set it to 2414U and now I get the same results as you mentioned above. I have to go to work (I sure wish my Dad had been rich!), but I'll test the functionality tonight. At least I'm getting the red entries now. Thanks! Dean

It may be just a finger check but the 2414 is a completely different family of device than the 2412/2413. Be sure the device type is not set to any 2414 combination as the command interface is very different than the 2412/2413 family of devices. Add a new Device Type for a 2413 that has the same information as a 2412 except Mem Top should be 8192. After adding the new Device Type do a reinit and then change the PLM device type to the new 2413 entry.
Not sure it will actually make a different because PH may use a PLM specific serial command that is not Mem Top sensitive.

Hi Guys,
I'm still not able to get the EZIO8SA to work. Lee helped me get the links set up (see below) and I think everything is as it should be, but the relays never activate (I'm not even thinking about the inputs at this time). The relays all work using the setup utility so I don't think it's hardware problems. I decided to give it a rest over the winter and re-attack the problem with a fresh perspective this spring. Unfortunately, I still can't see what I'm doing wrong. Here's a cut & paste of the links screen:
THE FORUM IS THROWING AN ERROR WHEN I TRY TO UPLOAD THE JPG. Group 21 Button 0 is relay 1, Group 22 Button 1 is relay 2, etc.
Here's the raw log of trying to turn relay 1 (I think - it may have been relay 2) on then off using the "control" button on the PLC/PLM GROUPS tab:

Here is the PCL/PLM GROUPS tab:
THE FORUM IS THROWING AN ERROR WHEN I TRY TO UPLOAD THE JPG.
And finally, here is the event log of the same events:
THE FORUM IS THROWING AN ERROR WHEN I TRY TO UPLOAD THE JPG.
I'm thinking it's probably just some little thing I'm overlooking but I just can't see it. I would really appreciate any help I could get!
Thanks,
Dean

Make sure the relay link records in the EZIO8SA have a 00
for Ramp Rate. These bytes do not have the same function as
other Insteon devices.

Thanks Lee. I changed the ramp rates but it had no effect. Could you perhaps post a direct command to turn on one of the relays? I've tried various commands using ph_insteon and it's variations with the different codes from the SHN command list and have been completely unable to toggle a relay under PowerHome.
Thanks,
Dean

The command set is available on the Smartenit web site.
All the EZIOxxx devices use the same set of commands
ph_insteon("EZIO8SA 1", 70, 00)
ph_insteon("EZIO8SA 1", 72, 00)
Direct command 70 turns individual relay On
Direct command 72 turns individual relay Off
The cmd2 field is 00-07 for relays 1-8

Well, I tried the two commands above (substituting the name of my EZIO device) and still no relay action. I am completely baffled that everything works properly when using the SHN utility but that the relays won't respond at all to any commands issued through PowerHome. I now no longer believe that it's something stupid that I'm overlooking. There has to be something that PH is handling differently than the SHN utility!
Lee, do you have any more suggestions?
Dave, can you offer any help? This is really getting frustrating!
Thanks,
Dean

My sincere apologies, I posted the wrong command numbers.
Converted hex to decimal on the fly.
Direct command 69 turns individual relay On
Direct command 70 turns individual relay Off
The cmd2 field is 00-07 for relays 1-8

Yes! Yes! Yes! Thank you Lee, you've done it again! For the first time in over a year I can now control the EZIO8SA relays through PH.
My problem with the direct commands was hex vs. dec. In the copy of the commands I got off the SHN website, the on/off commands were not preceded by 0x denoting hex so I assumed they were decimal.
I still don't know why I can't control the relays with normal PH on/off commands but now I can finish my projects using direct commands and worry about the on/off commands later.
Thank you Lee, I appreciate your help and am in your debt.
Take care,
Dean

Dean,
Glad to hear you got it worked out. Lee definitely knows his Insteon .
Things of this nature will be much easier in version 2.1.5.
Dave.
