My Smarthome PLC (an older 2814U) just failed. I was getting odd Insteon light responses and when I looked, PH showed comm errors with the PLC. The raw Insteon log showed corrupt database references. I deleted the database and reloaded the core application, then did a full install of all the Insteon IDs. Nothing (see raw Insteon log below).
PLC:eventraw=03
PLC:srq:SRIR=send failed
ui:srq:srir=00 00 00 07 97 4C 0F 19 00
uifinished:srq:srir=00 00 00 07 97 4C 0F 19 00
si:05 07 A8 07 97 4C 0F 19 00
Unfortunately I bought this one from some eBay vendor who I cannot recall so warranty is not an option. That means repair or replace. I have heard of simple capacitor failures on these units so I may investigate that, but what I am really wondering is what most people would use to replace this unit. Another PLC, a PLM? I am all ears.

PLM hands down. 10 times faster, no SDM, and very reliable.

Absolutely you want to go with the PLM.
As Pete mentioned it is not only more reliable, but doesn't require the "extra" software component the SmartHome Device Manager (SDM) to be loaded.
Leaner is better when it comes to adding cluttering background services in Windows.
Also note that I believe that SmartHome has advised they will not support the PLC in the future, and recommend the PLM for all new installations.

Right on, thanks for the input. I'll look into the SH PLM. Thanks again.

You want the PowerLinc Modem 2412S. I don’t believe they offer a USB option yet except for the HouseLinc version that was offered as an upgrade. There was a thread on the use of it with PH but I don’t know if all the results were conclusive. I use a USB to Serial Adapter with mine.

would the 2412u work? they have it for sale without house link now and it says its faster than the rs232 version.
http://www.smarthome.com/2412U/PowerLinc-INSTEON-Modem-USB/p .aspx
its 79.99 instead of 69.99 but i figure i will end up spending 10 on a usb to serial cable anyways is there any reason not to go with the 2412u?

Can’t think of any except the firmware is relatively new without much customer experience behind it. 2 year warranty should cover you.

I've been using the 2412U PLM's for about a year including the original firmware and the updated one for SmartHomes HouseLinc software. Both work wonderfully with PH!

Guess since GadgetGuy chimed in, I'll add my 2 cents. The 2412S has been pretty flawless. I used a USB converter at one point and had some issues, but since plugging it into the old serial port, no issues. I will say that for whatever reason the PLC seemed to get better reception of X10 signals under the identical circumstances than the PLM, but Insteon works well.
