K... trying the latest version again. Hadn't taken adequate time last time.

I'm hoping there's a "learn devices from PLC" option, but I'm not seeing one or finding mention of it on the 'board.

Is there one?

In case it's not clear, I'm looking for something like Cinemar has: I plug in the PLC and tell PH to scan it for links. Since one of my three PLCs has ALL the devices (that are capable) linked to it (thanks to HouseLinc), I'd like PH to learn about all the devices. I realize that I'll then have to name them, but I can live with that.

Can it do this?

Another question: can I import a file full of Insteon devices and their relevant IDs instead? Even better, learn it from HouseLinc?

Last way of asking for a similar thing: how 'bout the spidering method that HouseLinc uses? That seemed to find 90% of my devices just based on the links they have to each other. I only had to "seed" it with a few devices.

I was able to "clone" all of my links from my existing PLC a new PLC a number of weeks back...I think I used the "duplicate device" function...

I now have the new version installed, and am not yet sure how to do it with the new Insteon Explorer. Unfortunately I don't have the prior version up anymore and so I can't verify the name of the command I used previously.

Gregory,

Thanks for looking at this again. Ive also caught the post on Cocoontech so will try to implement your suggestions.

Currently there is no way for PowerHome to read the devices within a PLC or spidering of the links. I had not thought of the PLC read but had considered the spidering awhile ago and didnt think it would be useful since you wouldnt know what device was what. However, it seems that alot of people are interested in this functionality so I added it last night. I'll also add the PLC read as well .

There is no direct "import" into PowerHome. The PowerHome database is readily available via ODBC by other ODBC applications such as Access or Excel. However, this is probably beyond most users. I'll see what can be done.

Not sure what HouseLinc uses for a database so this feature is not available either.

Mike,

I think you're looking for the old "Replace Device" functionality. This is in the Insteon Explorer under the "Device Maint" tab. Scroll to the right and you'll see 3 columns Replace Address, Replace ID, and Swap ID.

You can also get this "Clone" device functionality out of the Links tab. Just highlight the Device you wish to clone in the middle window. It's controllers will appear in the upper window and it's responders will appear in the lower window. Click in the header of the upper window (selects all controllers), click in the header of the lower window (selects all responders) and press the "Copy" text above the middle window. Change the middle window to the new device to receive the "cloned" links and press the "Paste" text. Save and PowerHome will create all the links for you.

HTH,

Dave.

Hey! just noticed the post. Thanks, Dave.

Sorry for duplicating the CT post here.

I'll look at the ODBC option. If it's an easily built ODBC connector, I'll do it from Excel. I sure don't want to manually enter 50+ devices; nor do I want to run around the house pushing buttons madly again.

I look forward to any other feedback you can provide on my lengthy notes. I made them specifically with you in mind after seeing that you actually RESPONDED (gasp) to another post about Insteon software solutions.

You mention that you added spidering. Is it in the new release?

Gregory,

Yep, spidering AND PLC ID discovery is in the new version. You can get it from the download page and is version 1.03.4.9. I definately appreciate the feedback and hope to continue improving the product.

Concerning the ODBC, PowerHome uses a DSN-less connection so you'll first need to go into the ODBC Administrator (Control Panel) and create a DSN. Select a driver of "Adaptive Server Anywhere 6.0", and a userid/password of ph/ph. The database location is default located at c:\program files\powerhome\database\pwrhome.db. That should get you going. Further info can be found in this thread http://www.myx10.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=62.

Hope this helps and look forward to your feedback on the new version (even though alot will be the same, let me know if you think Im moving in the right direction). I'll be posting a response to the Cocoontech thread so feel free to follow up there if you prefer.

Thanks,

Dave.

Thanks, much, Dave! I can't seem to find spidering and discovery... as I posted in the other post.

I'll look into ODBC after I try those two for giggles.

Thanks!
