I get this following error message from the SDM3.

PORT UNKNOWN (4):Access violation at address 005CA797 in module 'SDM3.exe

When I type port=? I get:      

ui:port=?
uifinished:port=?

When I type port=usb4 I get:
ui:port=usb4
uifinished:port=usb4

What you get for the "port=usb4" is correct. Basically you're getting notified that you sent the command to the UI (user interface) and then that the UI is finished.

Ive had mixed results with the "port=?" command (some the same as yours) so this is why I don't use in PowerHome. With some SDM versions, it worked great, others it would work sometimes, and still others it wouldnt work at all. If you're having problems setting the proper port for the SDM, the surest way is to manually edit it in the registry.
