I'm switching to PH from EZServe. One of the things I liked about EZS was the ability to edit links in a file and then upload them to the device. I will be installing a plm with nearly 200 links - I would like to just import them into the software and then write them to the plm - is that possible?

There is no existing capability to do that. There are functions such as ph_readfile() and ph_insteon() which issues Insteon commands that can be used to issue Set MSB/Peek/Poke to write link records which could be used collectively in a PowerHome2 Macro to implement that type of capability.
Did you try the SHN Java Discovery tool to see if perhaps the EZSrve was assinged a different IP address. I thought I lost one of my EZSrve and it turned out the router had assigned it a different IP address for some unknown reason.

Hi Lee,
It's actually an EZBridge with the older version firmware. I tried to use the SHN utility to discover it - nada. The leds on the ethernet port are on bright steady - I think the orange one is suppose to blink with traffic. I tried to do a manual reset, but no change. I can now see how nice the EZServe was for managing links.

This is just not working and I'm about to give up. I purchased a new USB PLM to connect to PH - it does not seem to be able to communicate. I tried uninstalling PH/deleting the program folder/reinstalling - still nothing. I think I should return the PLM and go back to EZServe (price of a PLM + PH is about the same as an EZServe module).
I find the PH program to be a bit frustrating because it does not give me any feedback - I cannot tell when I add the PLM using the wizard whether it worked or not. Then, doing an 'auto' add of one device and I get nothing> I cannot deal with a program that does not give me feedback.

Under Help | About | Controllers does it show the PLM and the Port it is connected to.
Under File | Controller Connected is there a check mark along side Controller Connected.
Where there any errors when installing the Smarthome device driver for the USB PLM.
What OS are you using.

Hang in there we’ll get it. Under Setup-Controllers how do you have the PLM defined? What COM Port have you selected?

Assuming the Smarthome drivers were installed the Comx port number is likely wrong. The default is 1 which assumes the normal Serial port com number. The USB drivers that make the USB connection look like a Serial port normally start above that, maybe 4. If you get the latest SHN Utility Suite it now supports a PLM. You can run through the numbers as each Com number fails until you find the USB PLM Com number. The Device Manager under XP probably shows the number as well.

I love it Lee.. If you’re not fixing pumps, mowing the 9 acres or restoring power you find new projects to fix.
OK back to the problem I just wondering if we have a com port assignment problem. There is a handy tool that will find the actual com port. Download USBDeview from

Now I'm trying to link to devices using the so=called 'auto mode' PH says it will read each devices link database, which implies that I will be able to see/edit/re-write to the device edited links (tell me if I'm wrong about that).
When I try my first keypad (has maybe 20 links) - I follow the directions and PH appears to create a group-1 link between the PLM and the KPL, and it does not read the existing links database in the KPL (at least I cannot figure out how to view them in Insteon explorer). So what am I doing wrong, or am I expecting too much?

I would make sure you have the PLM linked as a responder and controller to the KPL. The “utility expert” is an expert with what you’re doing and I’m sure he will return after he gets the water on. Meanwhile we’ll keep plugging at it. I don’t know anything about “auto mode” unless if you are implying they will be built automatically when PH talks to that device. I build all my links in Insteon Explorer including the KPL links. But if the PLM is not a responder to the KPL I would believe that would be a problem.

Under the Insteon Explorer Links tab, double click on the device entry. This will establish the device as the "Current Device" and what ever Controller and Reesponder links PH has found or created should be listed under "Controllers (of current device)" and "Responders (of current device)" the current device. It has been awhile since starting from scratch but I don't think PH automatically creates any links. If you want to have a Trigger fire from a KPL button press a link from the specific KPL button as Controller to the PH PLM as a Responder has to be defined explicitly (if memory is correct). Some products create those links automatically like the ISY but that leads to hundreds of links that are never used.
If the links PH finds are changed through the Insteon Explorer GUI or news ones defined be sure the Insteon Explorer “Enable Pending” option in upper left corner of screen is checked. This option is necessary for PH to run background tasks which are used to create/update links among other things.

Once I manually linked to one kpl PH decided to start scanning devices and finding links. I'm slowly learning how things work - I will continue to play with it and will let you know if I get stuck again.
Thanks for the help and I hope the pump problem gets solved soon!
