Let's see if I can explain this simply enough:

Here's the scenario: "Porch" is a Switchlinc, and is cross-linked to button 2 on KPL1 and KPL2.

I have created a PLM group named "Porch Group" and created links to the PLM for each device (the Switchlinc and button 2 on both KPLs).

Everything works great.

I have recently added a new Switchlinc that controls some outside lights, and I created a new group called "Front Lights" so that I can turn all my front lights on and off via a group control.

My question: do I need to add the PLM to the original 3 devices a second time, with the new group number?

I think the answer is yes, but I'm writing because I am starting to compile a _lot_ of links on my small handful of devices, and I'm not sure I'm doing the right thing.

Thanks.

If you now want all 4 devices to be under control of the same PLM Group, Yes. However, if that is what you wanted why not add the new SwitchLink to the original PLM Group which already had the three definitions rather than create a new PLM Group.

Because, based on what I think I understand, I am supposed to create a separate PLM group for each individual SwitchLinc (and corresponding KPL buttons), just to properly control that light and the matching buttons on the different KPLs.

Then I create a _new_ PLM group with I have a group of lights that I periodically (but not exclusively) want to control together.

But the result is that each KPL is winding up with a dozen or more links to the PLM. I have each button pointing to a PLM group for those buttons (eg, all the KPL 2 buttons, all the 3 buttons, etc); then each button linked to a Switchlinc has the direct links plus links for the PLM to the PLM group to control that Switchlinc; then I have more links for the PLM to a group like "Outside lights."

It just seems like a lot of links, but maybe given what I am trying to do it's the right way?

Porch SwitchLinc, KPL1 button 2 and KPL2 button 2 are crossed linked so that any of the three control the Porch light and all three reflect whether the Porch light is On or Off. Each of these devices has three link records to accomplish the cross linking. One "Controller of" link record and two "Responder to" link records.

You now want PH to be able to control the above three devices such that with a single Group command from PH you can turn On or turn Off all three devices. One PLM Group with the three devices as responders. That adds one "Controller of" link record in the PLM and 1 "Responder to" link record in each of the three devices, Porch SwitchLinc, KPL1 button 2 and KPL 2 button 2. You want to keep this PLM Group so that PH can continue to control these three devices as one Group.

You add another Outside Lights SwitchLinc. You want a new PLM Group to control all four devices together. You now have one additional "Controller of" link record in the PLM to support the new 4 device PLM Group and 1 more "Responder to" link record in each of the three original devices, Porch SwitchLinc, KPL1 button 2 and KPL2 button 2, and 1 "Responder to" link record in the Outside Lights SwitchLinc for the 4 device PLM Group.

That is link record structure you need to control the configuration as I understand it. If that does not give you the control you are looking for or the link records you think you need can you explain what is missing. Thanks

Fantastic explanation, thank you! You helped me realize something that I had never known before: somehow I never loaded the PLM itself in the 'links' tab of the Insteon Explorer. Seeing the groups together like that makes everything completely intuitive and easy to understand.

It _does_ lead to a whole lot of links, but I guess that's okay...

Thanks again,

jtf,

Lee has you covered. If everything is cross-linked properly, it will create alot of links, especially for KPL's and PLC/PLM's.

I cant remember how many links a typical Insteon device can hold (such as a KPL) but it is on the order of a couple hundred I believe (I really should know this and did at one point but Im sure someone with a better memory will chime in).

Dave.

KeypadLincs support 417 link records. The PLC and older PLM the same. That is pretty much the standard for the legacy Smarthome Insteon products. The new PLMs with larger memory support 2000+ link records. The wireless Motion Sensor spec says 30 links.
