What's the best way to get analog or contact closure
type data to PH? (Say for example a relay connected the
door bell to tell PH when the door bell button is
pressed? Or respond to the contact closure on an alarm
system?)
Seems to me that using Insteon is both expensive and
round about way to do it (not to mention adding one more
delay step.)
Are there USB/Serial devices out there that work with
PH? Does anyone have something they are really fond of?

For contact closures, I would now use a DS10A (X10 RF Door/Window Sensor) and a W800RF32A.
I actually use an old, X10 table-top controller right now for my doorbell. I hacked the contacts across one of the On buttons.

Can always use an X-10 Powerflash module. i have one hooked to my doorbell, and chime modules around the house. Powerhome also picks up on the signal and uses it to flash insteon lights a couple of places.

Good call. I never had one, but that is simpler.

Thanks. I'll look into that.
I was actually hoping for a solution that could sidestep
the whole X-10 or Insteon all together. Seems like
there are enough devices out there that would do that.
Oh well.

Well, it really depends on the price you want to pay... there are other options. If an ELK M1Gold isn't out of the question then Id say use one of them and monitor the "zone" status with PH

The x10rf stuff with a W800RF32A is rock solid. I use the DS10A for everything; garage door sense, closet door sense, rain gauge. Add some motion sensors for walk-in closets.
