I'm attempting to shift my Insteon system over to my Elk M1Gold, and thought I was in great shape based on PH's communication with the M1XSP. The M1XSP appears to be functioning properly, the PLC database had the timercoreapp loaded successfully by PH, and the database was cleared with Insteon IDs then added. I have each Insteon device loaded into the M1XSP, and I can retrieve them back from the M1XSP. Everything seems perfect, but when I try to turn a light on or off from my Elk webpage on my own LAN, NOTHING HAPPENS! Each Insteon device is linked to the PLC via PH as both a controller and a responder (to enable status reporting).

This is driving me bonkers! Can anyone offer advice? What am I missing?

To set up the Elk, M1XSP and PLC I followed these instructions from David found in another thread:

"... the ideal way to proceed is to have the 2414u plugged into PowerHome and have PowerHome aware of the 2414s (in the Insteon devices table). Use PowerHome to create all of the links necessary between the individual Insteon devices and the 2414S. You do not need to create links between the devices and the 2414U unless you plan on controlling them from PowerHome as well as the Elk. Once all of your devices are programmed with links for the 2414S (and 2414U if desired), hook up the M1XSP. Use the null serial cable and the M1XSP tab in the Insteon Explorer to program the information into the M1XSP. When that is done, I would then hook up the 2414S to PowerHome and on the Setup tab, clear the PLC database and then "ADD ID's to PLC". This will insure everything is synced with one another.

Codger,

It wasnt clear from your post if you realized this or not, but if you've got only 1 PLC, after you've used PowerHome to prep it, you disconnect PowerHome from the M1XSP and then connect the PLC directly to the M1XSP. In this way, PowerHome will no longer be connected to the Insteon network and would typically only connect now to the Elk M1 Gold. The Elk treats all lighting as X10, so in order to now control your Insteon using PowerHome, you've got to create X10 addresses in PowerHome and send X10 commands to the Elk.

The post of mine that you're referencing is describing a setup with 2 PLC's. A 2414S that is always connected to the M1XSP and a 2414U that is always connected to PowerHome. In this manner, you can still have PowerHome control your Insteon as Insteon using the 2414U. The Elk will control the Insteon (as X10) using the M1XSP connected 2414S.

This may have absolutely nothing to do with your problem but figured I would mention it just in case.

Dave.

One other point is the check and make sure your M1XSP has the firmware loaded for Insteon. It takes special firmware to support Insteon which it does not come installed with. Elk can supply yoiu with the download.

Update: It was a bad M1XSP.

Thanks, Dave and Jim, for the ideas. I had things set up as you describe, but not much one can do when the serial expander is dead.
