I have a question about powerhome licensing. Is it tied to a specific system, or to a database?
I loved the 30 day trial, and it's been a great help getting my Insteon network going. I'm about to pull the trigger and buy, but was thinking of this scenario.
I've typically been running PH in my office with a PLC attached, but every now and then I run a parallel copy to my laptop to run the elkinsteon.exe utility by copying the database to my laptop, and then taking the laptop to my basement and connecting to the M1XSP via the laptop serial port and updating it with insteon address gathered in PH. Do I also need a licensed copy on my laptop? ie. buy two licenses? Or perhaps, if I just run the elkinsteon utility on my laptop, there is no reason for a licensed version of PH there?

The licensing is tied to the database. So basically all you have to do is copy the database to run PowerHome in multiple locations.
My thoughts are that PowerHome is licensed per database. If you have a home that you are automating, run as many copies of PowerHome within that home or offsite of that home in support of the home as you like. If you have a main home and vacation home that you're automating (two different databases technically), you can even do that with a single license of PowerHome. I leave it up to the user and their conscience and let them determine if PowerHome provides value enough for them to purchase two separate copies. I know of users who do it both ways.
For the scenario you describe, nothing will keep you from doing it with a single license and I certainly wouldnt expect anyone to purchase more than 1 license for that situation. I think a large number of people do something very similar where they have a copy they run and play with remotely for setup and then copy the databases back and forth. Heh, if it wasnt for having a copy at work, most people probably wouldnt have time to setup their automation  .
