Time to give Insteon another look now that there are some new tools available. Here is where I eventually want to get: I want have a 2414Usb connected to PowerHome (for light sensing and Insteon other control), and another 2114Serial connected to my ElkM1.

My present system only consists of:
-Switchlinc (kitchen)
-Switchlinc (living rm)
-Keypadlinc (6 button, MBR)
-2414S (connect to Elk), not presently set up. Will start from scratch (default the 2414, and M1XSP expander)
-2114U (connected to PH), presently seems to be able to control and sense lighting changes.
-PH computer doesn't have a Serial port (hence the 2414 USB). I do have a working USB to serial adapter (I've heard these can be flaky - but it works as desired on another project I am using it for).

Here are my questions (for now):

1) In PH/Setup/Controllers, I have the 2414U configured. What do I do with (where do I list) the 2414S that is connected to the Elk? The 2414S (connected to the Elk) may be used as a controller to send information from the Elk to PH (so PH would react). Once I get the links transferred into the M1, I will use it for control as well.

2) Assuming I get the links set up the way I want (which will force me to better understand the new Insteon Explorer), my earlier attempts to use the "ElkInsteon" utility were not successful. With the set-up I described above, what would be the best way to get the PowerHome Insteon programming/links into the Elk? Looking for help at a very basic level. While I have only three lights now, the new house is not far away. I am trying to learn how to use the more automated way of setting up the Elk links.

Thanks

Smarty,

PowerHome does not currently support the Elk as a controller yet. It will very soon though as this is what Im now working on (after I get these minor bugs fixed). When this support is available, you'll need to run a serial cable from the PowerHome machine to the Elk.

The support that is available now, is in the form of the ElkInsteon utility which will be integrated within PowerHome soon. When it is however, it still will not works as a "controller" and is only meant to program the M1XSP with Insteon device information. You would not leave this setup "connected" as it would not allow the Elk to work. The M1XSP is connected to the Elk via an RS-485 bus. The M1XSP's serial port is then connected to the 2414S. This is the normal operating mode. To use the ElkInsteon utility, you must disconnect the 2414S from the M1XSP and connect the PowerHome machine up instead using a serial cable to the M1XSP. PowerHome will then send the appropriate Insteon Device information to the M1XSP. When done, you disconnect the PowerHome machine and reconnect the 2414S. Hokey, but I guess it's better than the alternative.

Dave.

I guess I wasn't too clear with my orginal post (sorry, it was very late ).

Yes, I am aware that there is not Elk controller (yet) and that only the "ElkInsteon" utility presently exists.

I had posted in the past how I was unsucessful in using the ElkInsteon ultility (even on a machine that DID have a serial port). I was kinda hoping that by describing my present set-up, that maybe someone else has a similiar set up and can post some pointers (like dealing with a computer that does not have a seriel port - only usb). So......

1) In PH/Setup/Controllers, I have the 2414U configured to control Insteon from PH. What do I do with (where do I list) the 2414S that is connected to the Elk? It is NOT a PH controller, so I guess I should NOT list it in the controllers area (right?).   But it is a device that PH will see during polling. Do I even have to list it?

2) Once links are set up, I need to get them into the Elk. If someone has a set up similair to mine and has done this, I would sure like to hear any pointers.

Thanks,

Edit:
Just defaulted EVERTHING, and started over from a CLEAN slate. Wow, it took me a little bit, but now I REALLY GET the new Insteon Explorer.....It is GREAT!!

Dave: Thanks for your response. It is ALWAYS appreacited
