Just a friendly inquiry on the new version / update... Looking forward to the improved Insteon link management, in particular. Any news?
Thanks.

As a matter of fact, yes .
Code development is coming along. Alot of enhancements and improvements to Insteon support including linking. This includes a completely new Insteon Explorer which should greatly simplify Insteon setup so you don't have to jump all around right-clicking in various places.
I feel confident that Im far enough along to be reasonably sure that I will have the next beta out by next weekend (keep in mind that goes all the way to midnight just before Monday ). I hate dragging things out but nearly every waking moment outside of work is being devoted to finishing up this next version now. There are still alot of little loose ends to tie up but I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel and think I'll be able to get it out sometime next weekend.
Hope this helps,
Dave.

HUGE help! Thanks!
Frankly, I'm really frustrated with my Insteon setup at this point, and hoping that the new release will help me fix some things. PH is very helpful, but for Insteon, I think my verdict is still out.

Any news on the Update?
I just received a new rev of the PLC so I want to live dangerously and change everything at once!

What determines when you need a new rev of the PLC? Should I be sending all my PowerLincs back for exchange? What issues will that fix?

Smarthome has announced a swap program for all firmware revisions 2.12 or earlier (to 2.13). They have a form to fill out and offer cross ship (although we have to pay return shipping). Sorry, I don't have the form but it's likely available on the techmall site, or by calling SH.
I'd congratulate them, but it's been a LOOOOONNNNGGGG time getting to this point, I've replaced a LOT of hardware, and now I get to pay my own shipping to return the stuff.
Yippee. More SH fun...

OK, it looks like I bought Insteon hardware way too early...(like others)
When I look at the back of my 2414U PLC I see 4 stickers:
1) 3805
2) 07.8B.11 (the address)
3) 0616 REV 1.6
4) 1009
When I look at the back of my other 2414S I see:
1) V1.2 0451
2) 01.82.7F (the address)
3) 0602 REV 1.6
4) 2414S 2405
Do I need to return these for updated firmware? Dave or others, will these work with PH and Elk M1?

Here is the link to the exchange program:

BTW, 1.6 isn't that old as that is what most of us are using (I think).

But the form still doesn't say what is being fixed by the upgrade...
And what about my 2414X translator? Should I exchange that also?

Only one thing was fixed that might affect any of the current software like Power-home or hardware like Elk that is currently in use and that had to do with some logic to minimize X10 falses on noisy lines.
Other fixes were a change to the USB code so that the USB PLC doesn't tell your computer that it needs power (this lets it work attached to a non-powered USB HUB).
Another change minimized blinking of the light to once per valid packet on X10 traffic. The rest of the fixes involved salad and factory reset and wouldn't normally come into play for anything currently available.
BTW I believe the trade in webpage is just for developers since they need to be able to support all the versions starting with the 1.6 (2.12 Firmware) version. The SDM works fine with the older versions of the PLC. Anyone else should be going thru phone RMA if they are having issues with their PLC.
One more BTW -- the 2.0 USB PLC works fine with PH-- I unchecked controller attached in power-home, swapped out my 1.6 PLC for the 2.0 one, added a new insteon UNIT of type PLC and my new ID, exited power-home and waited for SDM to close, restarted powerhome and enabled controller attached, went into the Insteon Utility and Cleared the PLC database and then did an Add IDs to the PLC, and finally used the replace device option to change the old plc to the new in my devices. Total time was about 15 minutes and all 50 of my devices were switched over to recognize the new PLC. Everthing ran fine overnight so as usual I love power-home. No noticeable change in any way using the new PLC compared with the OLD (I am using SDM 235 both before and now).

Did they fix whatever it is that makes communications between the PC and PLC so slow?

In my limited experience with programmers, I've learned to add 50% to any completion time estimate to account for QA testing and clean-up. Programming is the half way mark.
It would be worse than the wait to have something buggy out way before its time (Insteon HW anyone?), because then you'd be waiting for a fix, and asking why they released something not quite up to expectations.
If the software is done on the side this may grow longer as coders need to enjoy life as much as we do. That's why I don't ask for specific dates from Dave , just general season and year.
With that said.
Dave, we're sending over people to do your house chores, sending your wife to a spa, kids to DisneyWorld with a licenced Nanny, while you concentrate on PH exclusively
or not.

Yeah, what they said!
And Manny, at least Dave says he's releasing Beta software. Smarthome released Insteon as Production. Little did we know, it too really is Beta. <sigh>

In my extensive experience with programmers, I've learned to double the estimate, then add 50%. And that definitely does not account for QA and clean-up!
Note that as a programmer I always adjust my estimates by the above formula to try and avoid this - but it never works the formula still always holds...

I classify Dave's Betas like Google's Betas (I consider them Production).
My formula changes per programmer (who is really the last person to ask regarding live dates), and QA , and Documentation Writer, etc...
Finally, just to mix it some, I change the requirements near the completion date.

Ok.....here it is.
PowerHome version 1.03.4.8 is now available for download. Got a little rushed so the help file has not been updated with the new functions. I'll try to get this ready in the next couple of days. In the meantime if you have any specific questions on the new functions, just post a message.
Be sure and read the readme.rtf as this document lists the new functions, changed functions, and deleted functions. If you primarily just use PowerHome for Insteon management, you won't need to worry about this.
Below are just some general things new to check:
New stock graphics for the new Control Center under the web subdirectory.
You can pretty much design Control Center tabs now completely from the Design window (except for creating the actual tab in the PowerHome Explorer). In the Design Window, press Shift-F9 to bring up the object properties window. Double-click an object to move it's properties into this window.
For you Insteon fans, check out the new Insteon Explorer under the Maintenance menu. From this tabbed window you can completely manage your Insteon network.
For those of you that use the ph_winampinfo function, it now takes 3 parameters instead of 2. Details below:
ph_winampinfo parameters:
string command
long data
integer local
The command and local parameters are the same. The new data parameter is
used on some of the new commands. Just set this parameter to 0 for all
other commands.
New commands are:
listfilename
listtitlename
listartist
listtitle
listalbum
listyear
listbitrate
listlength
For the above commands, set the data field to the number of the data you
wish to retrieve. For instance, to get the title name of the 5th song with
any errors returned in [LOCAL1], use ph_winampinfo("listtitlename",5,1)
One last thing, the database upgrade utility does not copy over your controller definitions due to changes in the CTLRPARMS table. So after upgrading, you'll need to redefine your controllers. Pretty much everything should upgrade without a problem.
As always, let me know if you encounter any problems and give me any feedback on the new functionality. Some things didnt make this release (details in readme.rtf) and there are still a few more Insteon tricks up my sleeve that I'll be working on.
Dave.
