Hello all,
I finally got to ordering some Insteon stuff, and right now not sure I should have bothered.
Right from the start, I downloaded and installed the drivers... I think. There is no normal "setup.exe" type program, but I knew enough to install the .inf files. Nothing happens when doing that, no ackowledgement, no anything. Nice start, already has me wondering if it even worked.
I carried on, powered up the modem, plugged it into the COM port, and Windows doesn't detect it. No info what to do if it doesn't, so I move along. Start up PH2 and see what happens, a error window keeps popping up so often it almost prevents me from trying anything, but as annoying as it is, I eventually get to the PH2 Wizard and add the Insteon controller. There is no option for my controller model 2413S only a 2414S so I choose that one. Eventually it shows up in PH.. the REALLY annoying window keeps popping up every 3 seconds, and needs to be clicked on before I can go back to what I am doing.
Moving on to a module. I plug in the 2457D2 LampLinc, it functions as it should, and using the buttons on the side can control the light.. woohoo! Back to PH, can't stop the REALLY REALLY annoying message, so exit everything and here I am.
I am not the most patient person when it comes to things that make the consumer have to go out of their way to find additional instructions, and you gotta love the link to the Owner's manual.
http://wiki.smarthome.com/index.php?title=2457D2_Manual what company does that?! Jeeze, they really should try a link shortening system!
Any how, so to rant, but I am not the least bit impressed with Smarthome at this moment. Can someone please tell me what's going on? Below is a image of the error that just won't stop.
Thanks,
Brian

The SDM3 Device Manager is not used with any variant of PLM, only a 2414 PLC. There are no special drivers needed for a 2412S or 2413S Serial PLM. The 2413S Serial Dual Band PLM is functionally equivalent to the 2412S PLM which is the Device Type that should be used.
The Dual Band PLM does support less total links in the PLM itself but all the commands to interface with a PLM are the same between a 2412S and 2413S PLM.

Ok, not sure what you are telling me here. Are you saying I have the wrong device? As for drivers, I just followed the instructions provided. I have no idea where to go from here because I can't tell if it is talking with PH or not.

Brian, just define it in controllers as Insteon PLM. Make sure you get the COM Port right. There are no drivers as they are supplied by MS. In Devices I have it defined as 2412s.

Yes, you picked the wrong device type.
Change the device type to 2412S PLM as that is functionally equivalent to a 2413S PLM as far as the PLM function is concerned.
When the 2414S PLC device type was selected it causes PH2 to use the SDM3 Smarthome Device Manager. SDM3 knows nothing about a PLM, only a PLC. Very different devices with very different interfaces. The 2412S and 2413S PLMs do not require special device drivers as they use standard Serial Port protocol so do not be concerned over device drivers you installed. Nothing regarding a 2412S or 2413S PLM should have indicated a need for device drivers. If something directed the install of device drivers it could be the instructions for a 2413U PLM (USB variant).

Hey Pete, I was on another forum when the notify email came in. From the time stamps you must have already been generating your post as I was just getting started.
Gosh, 1000, does that come with a gold watch ?

I REALLY hate Murphy's law. I'll try changing the device type when I get home, and see what happens.
Thanks for the help guys

Wow, ok Beachbum was right... I think. Setting it to
2412S stopped the errors, and PH seems happy.
I'm telling you, this Insteon crap better work well if I
get it working!
I tried following their "quick-start" guide which is
useless really. So headed over to the smarthome site to
find some manuals, and some help on getting these things
to talk. It is even more useless there then the paper
that came with it.
So I have to count on the good old smart people over
here at PowerHome! I currently have no idea what I am
supposed to be doing, or what I should be seeing in the
Insteon Explorer, so I am off to browse these forums to
try and find out.. stay tuned, I'll be back.

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!!! I got alight to come on!
The problem is, not entirely sure how I got the LampLinc
module enrolled (linked??) I did a lot of clicking and
button pushing. Good thing is, I have a light switch to try
that all over with.
I'm still not clear on the "Groups" thing, is that like
house codes in X10??

Yes and no.. I’m sure ya like that answer. X10 all units in the same house code can be turned on and off. Insteon all devices link to a group (number) can be controlled in various fashions. I’ll defer the details to Lee but unlike X10 the group control has built in redundancy for error recovery. You will learn the key here is Linking which can be accomplished in various fashions. I do all my through PH but it can be done entirely without PH. That was the 50,000 foot view I defer you to Lee for the real stuff.
