Define the 2414 PLC as a Controller using Powerhome Explorer under Setup/Controllers specifying a Controller Type of Insteon DM.

I have an another question what do you mean by “When I try to use wizzard to set up, sdm.3exe , An error occured in the application.”?

I did try to set up as a controller that is when I got the message. The message comes up when I try to set up controller. The system sends back that error code.

Are you using the Wizard or PowerHome Explorer. Is all the message text "An error occurred in the application", no additional information about the nature of the error.
Outside of a Powerhome invoke sdm3.exe directly and see if you get a blue T shaped ICON in the system tray. That is XP terminology. Don't know if Windows 7 calls it something different. If the T shaped ICON is there double click on it and see what messages are in the SDM3 window. Does it say it found the PLC.

Lee, it’s a white T with a yellow dot in Win7. I tested it using the Wizard and had no errors. I am still confused about when the error comes. You define the controller and then PH does an automatic reinit. Does the error occur before the reinit or after and if after do you show what Lee referenced to?

When I click on the "T" I get the same error code. I worked with smart home tech and the device manager "sees" the 2414U even its hex code. after working with them, I don't get the message on wizzard anymore. But in powerhome explorer when looking up controller, doesn't show a thing...This Sucks...Doin this for a customer, can't finish, can't get paid!

Is it possible you can get a screen shot and post it when the message occurs? Also have you checked the event viewer to see if it is showing there? What is exactly does the message say? What happens if you manually setup the controller in PH explorer?

Thank, can't print message but in a little message window top left is sdm3.exe, in the main section is "an error has occurred in the application". If I go into description it notes "Error accessing the OLE registry". I can add manually but it still will not "see" it or any other controller/responder.

Are you running the application (PH) as Administrator? If not you need to set it up to run as Administrator and I also run mine in Compatibility mode.

Right click on PH and select Properties then click on Advanced under the Shortcut tab. After that check the box Run as administrator. That is just one of a few ways. For Compatibility Mode. Go to Properties again and select Compatibility tab. After that check Run this program… and finally select XP Service Pack 2.

As an FYI, the next PowerHome you set up do it with a PLM rather than a PLC. The PLC is very old technology that does not support Extended commands. It will not be long before the PLC has to be replaced with a PLM to be able to manage devices such as Motion Sensors and TriggerLincs.

I'm still using a PLC. It has been in use for about two
years now, and seems to be running fine. If I feel like
upgrading, is this the PLM that I would want to get and
please verify that this one works with PH.

Yes, I am curious also. I am doin a large home in two weeks that is about 3 hours away. I would want to use what ever is best. I will use remote access for programming after inital setup.

I prefer the Serial version of the PLM if you have a Serial Port available. The USB version runs fine when connected to a USB port but requires a driver from Smarthome that makes the USB port actually look like a Serial Com port from the application point of view. This works fine, just one more step to add the new USB device driver that is not needed if a Serial port is available. Many computers no longer come with a Serial port so the USB variant may be the only option.
The Dual Band PLM (2413) is the more advanced PLM as it not only functions as the powerline interface it also combines the function of an Access Point in a single case.
The choice of PLM has no affect on remote access.
As was noted the PLC runs okay. It is old technology which does not support Extended commands. Today Powerhome does not support Extended commands either so nothing is lost. The other major software packages support Extended commands today and it is on the list of items Dave has indicated will be in the next PH release. A PLM will be required to utilize Extended commands.
EDIT: forgot to mention this. The Dual Band PLM seems to run faster and it does have a faster internal CPU. It supports fewer link records but this would come into play only on the extremely large configuration. The standard PLM supports 2000+ links, the Dual Band PLM supports 1000+ links. An SH rep on the SH forum has indicated the Dual Band PLM actually support over 1400 links so this would only affect a very very large installation.

No contest the serial PLM beats them all hands down.
