As a loyal Powerhome user, I've been on the fence about PH2. Sure, I'd like to help out testing it, but I consider my home-control "mission-critical" - it really runs my house and I can't tolerate too many problems (which is why I use PH 8-}). So for the moment I've been sitting on the sidelines. However, my guilt (and curiosity) are getting to me, so I have 2 questions.
1) Is it easy to switch back/forth between PH1 and PH2? so that maybe i could run PH2 for a weekend (or an afternoon) and then easily switch back during the week when I'm not home?
2) How is PH2 doing? I see a few people posting a few disturbing problems, but are 99% of you running without -any- issues?
Thanks

Jeff, I would wait until Dave puts out a fix for some of the current problems. I personally am not experiencing them but you run a little more complex than I do. As the saying go don’t install until SP1 is available

I've been running PH2 for a month or more without any
problems and I have a fairly complex setup. All
triggers and Timed Events, RS232, USB-UIRT, CID and
macros seem to work as before if not faster. I'm
running a PLM not a PLC with only a few X-10 devices but
many Insteon devices, so maybe that makes a difference.
There is a problem creating new Timed Events. Dave
knows about it and has it fixed but has not released the
fix yet. All my previous Timed Events converted and
work properly and there are some work arounds for
creating new Timed Events that have been previously
posted. Some people have had problems with some Timed
Events not firing at times but I have not experienced
that behavior.
PH2 adds some nice features like UPB, the wizards, and
automatic update of global variables in the control
center, but if you're happy with PH1 and don't need
these features immediately, no need to switch (yet).

I'm happy with PH1, but eager to play with PH2 (and not sure PH1 will support my INSTEON motion sensor if/when it ever arrives 8-})
I'll wait for the "SP1" - is there any ETA?
I take it there's no easy way to switch back/forth?

That’s a good question… If you have PH in 2 different folders with their own database files it should work. My only hesitation would be files uniquely registered in Windows Registry. I’m sure there are those out there that may have the answer

I would think you could have a PowerHome and PowerHomeA folder and switch between with no problem (just rename the folders when you want to switch). Also, I don't think PH uses the registry for anything.

Tony, what about the CID plugin?
regsvr32 "c:\program files\powerhome\plugins\ph_cid.ocx"
Or is this a misconception on my part.. Also I thought the SDM currently being used was stored in the Registry. I could be wrong...

Ah. You are correct, Pete, and for the SDM, I forgot about that one since getting the PLM.

Jeff, I haven't upgraded yet (mainly because I've had no time for fiddling and what I have has been consumed by setting up the phone system) but I have run a 'standard' and 'experimental' setup of PH1. Safest way to do it is on 2 separate machines. I just leave the standard one (which runs headless on an intel itx in one of my automation boxes) completely alone until I'm sure that I want changes I've experimented with.

You are correct in that it is the safest way to run 2 PHs. I run 2 separate systems with PH installed but I learned the PLC and PLM will NOT coexist on the same power line at the same time. One system is active the other is not connected to a power line. I would assume 2 separate PLCs would work. The correct way would be to have 1 PLC and be plugged into one or the other PH.

I run PH2 on a PLC just fine. When the PH Alpha came out with PLM support there were comments that the PLM ran faster. Also the PLM eliminated issues folks were associating with SDM3 or the PLC but I run PH2 and Houselinc1 through the same PLC with no known issues.

Do you run them at the same time on the same PC? Did you have to do anything special?

I do run them on the same PC at the same time. No changes were necessary. SDM3 supports multiple sessions. I don't try to tax the environment with both establishing links at the same time, that sort of thing, but I have timers on HouseLinc and Timed Events on PH that work fine. They do not fire at the same time. Just as I don't push on two Insteon switches at the same time. Both software packages seem fine with the other active at the same time.

I don't think that's quite the same as running PH1 and PH2 at the same time - they may share registry entries, etc
