All,

You'll never believe this...just found out that the SmartLinc has a hidden port that enables it to be used as a standard network based PLM. Didnt find out from SmartHome and they've have never documented the existence of such a thing. Just happened upon it while searching for info on a different problem.

Anyways, just thought I would pass this along as it has been a very requested feature. The amazing thing is that PowerHome (2.1.4 beta) is ready to make use of this as is. This is pretty cool as you can now have a remote PLM (the SmartLinc) and connect PowerHome to over ethernet. If you've got a SmartLinc, give it a try.

To test this out, you need to open PowerHome Explorer and navigate to the plugins section. Create a new plugin entry. Give an appropriate ID and set the activex column to: PH_VSP.phvsp

For initialization data, use something like this:

 7 9761 192.168.0.174

The first number is the desired virtual COM port. You must pick a value that is not currently in use or exists as a COM port. The second number 9761 is the magic PLM port on the SmartLinc. Leave this as is. The last parameter is the IP of your SmartLinc.

Once you've configured your plugin line, navigate to Controllers and create a new or change your existing PLM line. Just make the COM port match the value you used for the plugin. In my example above, this would be COM 7. Reinit or restart and you should be using your SmartLinc as a standard PLM. Of course, you'll need to do the standard Add Min or Add Full on the Setup screen.

Let me know if anyone tests this or not and if you encounter any issues. If all works well, I'll advertise this an available option.

 Dave.

Dave, I gave it a whirl but I can't get by "not able to open com port". If I go to Help-Plugins this is what I see.

 PowerHome Virtual Serial Port Plugin
 COM: 9
 Remote Host: 192.168.1.109
 Remote Port: 9761
 PowerHome Plugin ID: PLM
 Plugin Version: 1.0
 SDK Version: 1.2
 Current Status: Disabled.

Something flashes at me when I reinit probable the plugin failing. Tried different com ports to no avail.

I may have figured it out. I loaded the drivers and the plugin took. Tomorrow I will test.

Dave, it seems to work perfectly fine but will not take a load full just a min. What else can we do with this thing?

Pete,

Glad you got it figured it out. I was going to suggest registering the Virtual serial port components but it looks like you already did it.

The odd thing though is that it won't take a full download. Even though everything should work with just a min, a full would be better as I believe its a later model PLM that is expecting full links. I'll have to confirm with my unit at home (also just ordered a second one when they had their reduced price a few days ago...mine hasnt arrived yet) later tonight when I get in.

Once its connected up and running though, you should be able to transfer all of your links from your old PLM into the new SmartLinc and use it as a network connected PLM. And of course, it also has its own internal webserver interface where you can create timers, etc. that run outside of PH. The version of I have is an early beta and I know they've changed the internal software from what I have. Not sure if it has any email capability or what all you can do with it (hence ordering a new one :) but an idea I would like to try is to have it and PowerHome periodically "communicate" and if the SmartLinc detects a COMM issue with PH, then possibly reboot the PH computer by turning on/off an appliancelinc that the PH PC is plugged into.

I'll know more about what else cool it could be used for after I get mine but the simple fact of a networked PLM is enough for me .

 Dave.

BTW...been researching the issue with the forum not accepting files and found out that 1 and 1 let their license lapse on the upload component. No word from them on when or if this will be fixed so Im investigating alternative file upload solutions. Hope to have something in place by this weekend.

 Dave.

I wonder if I can create a virtual port connection from an outside IP address. I'm about to go on the road so we'll find out. 9761 has been opened in all my routers.

I tested on the road and the vsp connects with no problem from the outside. Possibilities unlimited. I’m also trying to control the insteon network from multiple resources meaning multiple PHs using one controller vs 2 PHs using 2 controllers with one listening only. Currently I have USB PLM being controlled from the house while the system with me is in listening mode only with CC allowed to override on the TCPIP controller.

I am trying above with Insteon Hub 2242-222.
I am getting plugin error on startup return code is -2

 I have loaded driver manually c:\powerhome\drivers\VSP 6.2\vspdxp_install.exe

I have tried the REGSVR32 and PH_VSP.ocx which register without any problem.

Insteon HUb also does have the port 9761 it does connect fine with Houselinc software.

Thanks in advance for any help.

 Nick

Nick,

It looks like the VSP plugin is having problems loading
so we're not even getting to the point to connecting to
 the Hub.

What OS are you using? If its Win 7, then its most
likely the current version of the Virtual serial port
activex at fault. Ive got a newer version and will work
up an upgrade to the PHVSP plugin to see it that helps.

If you're on XP, then we should be able to get you going.

In any event, let me know your parameters for the PHVSP
plugin and we'll go from there.

 Dave.

Nick,

Since you're running XP we should definitely be able to
 get you going.

I see that in your config string you're trying to use COM
7 (the same I used). Have you verified that COM 7 is not
currently in use anywhere else within your system (check
 COM ports under Device Manager).

If COM 7 is free to use in your system, can the PowerHome
machine reach the IP address 10.0.0.89. You should be
able to hit the web inteferface (port 80) of the
SmartLinc by entering 10.0.0.89 in a web browser on the
 PH machine.

I carefully reread your last email and see a problem with
the -999 return. -999 means that the plugin ID was not
found. It appears that you're trying to reinit and
enable a plugin ID of "PH-VSP" but from the Help->About-
 >Plugins and the parameters you sent earlier, your plugin
ID should be "HUB" (PowerHome Plugin ID: HUB). Not sure
where PH-VSP is coming from I would correct this first.

With the plugin now at least showing in the Help->About-
 >Plugins screen, are you getting any kind of error in the
eventlog when starting PH? If so, can you copy/paste the
exact text of the error and I can track down at what
 point the error is occurring.

 Thanks,

 Dave.

Nick,

Gotcha. So the error message is for the controller and
not the plugin. The plugin needs to load first and
create COM 7 and then the controller tries to connect to
COM 7. Since the plugin is not actually creating COM 7
(apparently without an error message though) the
 controller will of course fail.

Yes, its safe to use the same ID of HUB for both the
plugin and the controller. They can also be different
because the only real link is the COM 7.

It looks like the ph_pictrl commands are working now
since we're getting the -998 back. I was experimenting
on my Win 7 machine and am getting the same results as
 you (probably different reasons though).

Give this a try. Open your Device Manager window and
expand the COM ports section. With it in the background
(but the COM ports still visible) and PH in the
foreground, open the Multi-Editor in PH Formula mode
(shift-F6) and do the reinit command:

 ph_pictrl("HUB","reinit",0)

See if the COM port is created at all and then goes away
(this is where Im at on my system).

Let me know and we'll go from there.

 Dave.

ON mine something happens , because its collapse the whole Device manager listing and then redisplay again. (so I can not see in between if the port was created but since its collapse and redisplay again assume it created something)

 Just to add
Also I tried from web browser and HUB does respond to command and I was able to turn light on and off in serial mode.

 http://10.0.0.89/3?02620CC4530F11FF=I=3 (for on)
 http://10.0.0.89/3?02620CC4530F13FF=I=3 (for off)

above command Device ID is 0CC453 (for others you can can put your own device ID to try)

 Thanks
 Nick

Okay some more info.

If I change the port from 9761 to 80 plugin shows Enable,
Device Manager shows ELTIMA virtual serial port

 but still get error :
Get IM Info command failed for Insteon PLM HUB. Attempting to restart controller...

now I dont know if port 9761 only acts as PLM
but as I mention before Houslinc does connect using 9761 and refers as connected on SmartLinc on port 9761

(dont know if HUB needs some other extra info to connect)

Nick,

Definite progress. With that info, it shows that we've
got the plugin actually working and the controller even
connecting to it. I would expect it to fail though on
port 80 (the controller connecting as a PLM) since port
is the standard HTTP web interface and would not be
compatible with the raw PLM communication protocol.

Since we know the plugin works, the key now is to make
the plugin connect to port 9761. Since Houselinc can
connect to 9761 we should be able to get the plugin as
well. The first thing I would do is make sure that
Houselinc is completely shutdown before trying to get the
PH plugin to connect. You can typically only have a
single device connect to a single port at a time unless
they've actually configured it as a server.

If HouseLinc is shutdown and nothing else is connected to
port 9761, I wonder if there is something specific to the
hub that is required to be sent. When you had the Device
Manager open and you saw the COM ports flash and refresh,
that would mean that a serial port was actually being
created but it was shutting down almost immediately. Im
wondering if the Hub is expecting some kind of
communication or synchronization bytes to be sent in
order for it to hold the port open.

Anyways, the next step would be to make sure that nothing
else has the port open when PH tries to init the plugin.
If nothing is else has it open, probably the only way to
try and see what is different between the hub and a
SmartLinc will be to write a special debug program to try
 and intercept the synchronization process.

 Dave.

Thanks Dave,

 worked

I rebooted the computer which was running HouseLinc even though HouseLinc was exited and not running.
I should have known that socket ports are remain open in windows in some apps even after you exit.

Now time to play with new toy ...

 Thanks again Dave.
