Hey guys, I am having a small problem and I am looking for the best way to do this. I just purchased a new Laplink device. From reading on the forums this device is just a responder so you can not link it in a group. I am just trying find a simple way to use a timed event to turn this device on and off.

I have tried to use a macro as well as device control and it will only work if I turn it on or off from the web center but not by timed event.

Can someone help me with the forum for on and off?

TIA
Dave

sifu,

Not quite sure what a "laplink" device is. Im thinking its an insteon device of some kind. If you could let me know the model # or a link to the device, it'll be a big help.

Not sure why it would only work from the web center (I think you're referring to the device status screen available via the web). Are you able to control it from the Device Status screen within PowerHome?

Dave.

Hey dhoward. The device is a Insteon 2456D3 LampLinc - INSTEON Plug-In Lamp Dimmer Module, 3-Pin.

I am really just trying to find out what command i need to plug in to the timed event to get this to turn on and off at a certain time. I have tried INSTEONGROUP+ON however you can't link these to anything so that approach doesn't work.

I can also control it from the Device Status screen within PowerHome?

TIA
Dave

sifu,

A lamplinc...duhh, I should have realized that (was thinking of the old software to link to pc's together).

You can actually set these devices as a responder to within a group so you could have the PLM as a controller and the lamplinc as a responder.

But, if you just want to control it direct via PowerHome, you don't actually need a group. The device control string would be:

INSTEON+YOURLAMPLINCID+ON

This is a direct command vs a group command (which will not work if its not in a group) and should get you going.

Dave.

I remember reading somewhere that these can't be responders. Was that incorrect? When I try to drag that device under the links tab to a responder group it won't populate anything.

Ok I thought that would of worked. I guess something else is going on. This doesn't seem to work for this one device but everything else I have.

This is what I have set for the off command.
Doll Stand Insteon DOLLSTAND [21.3D.FD] INSTEONGROUP+DOLLSTAND+OFF

sifu,

To add as a responder within a group, make sure that the device type has responder groups set to 1.

Change your command from INSTEONGROUP to INSTEON.

I have removed it from the groups since I should be able to control it as a device.

In the Links Tab if I look at the DOLLSTAND the controller of the current device is set to powerlinc1 group 6. I also changed that to group 1 and tried to send that macro and that didn't work. I can still control it from devices and web but not if i send that as a macro.

Am I doing something wrong?

sifu,

What does your macro look like? When you say control it from devices, do you mean the Device Status screen (alt_F6)? What does the eventlog look like when you play the macro?

Let me know,

Dave.

Macro = INSTEON+DOLLSTAND+ON or OFF (this wont work)
For devices in Insteon Explorer I select the Devices tab at the bottom then select control and press on or off ( this works)
If I use alt+F6 or the web control it will work.

Event log just reports Macro INSTEON+DOLLSTAND+ON Executed and nothing else. No errors.

sifu,

Im thinking the macro is not setup properly. To properly create the macro, open PH Explorer and navigate to PowerHome|Macros. In the Macros screen on the right, create a new entry with an ID of DOLLSTANDON. Set the Description to DollStand On. Leave the other columns at their default. Click the button to the left of the ID column to enter the Macro Detail screen. Enter the line below:

10 Device Control INSTEON+DOLLSTAND+ON

Right click and "play" the macro.

Ok that did the trick. I was able to play both newly created macros for on and off. I changed the timed events to macro and selected the macro and it now works!

Prior I did not have a macro setup and am curious why in timed events INSTEON+DEVICEID+ON or OFF will work for a group but not a stand alone device?

THANK YOU for your help :)

sifu,

Glad the macro is working for you.

You should be able to have a timed event with an action type of "Device Control" with an action of INSTEON+DOLLSTAND+ON and it should work.

Im wondering if what you had was the action type set to Macro and the action to a device control string.

I just duplicated there and the only thing I didn't realize is that I was using INSTEONGROUP instead of INSTEON.

I do have one last question. Currently the beta the wizards do not work. Will these work again in the future?

The wizards are going to be rewritten after 2.1.5 is released. The Control Center wizard should be available though if you're on version 2.1.4.
