Nope, Lee, Jeff, Tony, Ken, Pete, Noel (and others) are all just PH zealots. Im basically a one man show.
My "real" job is as a software engineer for a major defense contractor. However, 28 years ago I got my start in software engineering with an environmental controls contractor when DDC (Direct Digital Control) was just emerging and cut my teeth in that industry with TSBA controls. Basically everything I did then for building automation and control is what we're realizing now in home automation. PowerHome definitely does not pay the bills  .
As Lee pointed out, SmartHome does make available an SDK which I bought into (preordered actually) when they were first made available. It does get you access to critical documents required for Insteon programming but alot of stuff is missing and must be determined via extensive testing. Its been a long and interesting trip working with Insteon. PowerHome was actually the first (or one of the first) software packages to support Insteon software linking back in the 2005/2006 timeframe and the only one at the time that did this by crawling the entire Insteon network and storing it in its own local database.

Hey Dave - small world - I work for a small company doing primarily defense contracts (wireless and SATCOM).
FWIW - Steve Lee @Insteon thinks the world of you. Not sure how much you talk to him but might be worth a call next time you hit a roadblock at SH.
Dave called me a Zealot! I'm so proud! 8-} (actually, I wasn't sure he ever forgave me for the first review of PH (Rev 1.0) I wrote in Home Automation 100 years or so ago).

I'm ~100% sure this has been covered somewhere else, but
the 2.1.4b patch doesn't allow configuring a KPL right?
I've got a new relatively new one (V6.2, it's been
sitting in a box waiting for setup for a couple months
now) and it seems that I can do the links just fine but
while KPL config loads it gives me crazy random data.
Also, interestingly, it must be reporting a different
device type as it didn't come up as a 2486D. Is that
normal? Are the new I2CS devices considered different to
PH? (which, given that the communication is probably
totally different makes sense.)

Correct, PH KPL configuration cannot configure the new
KPLs

It is likely a Dual Band KPL which does carry a unique
cat/subcat (device type)

They are different in that they will always have a
different firmware level then the non I2CS variant. The
Insteon interface is very different. The messages have
additional requirements and they have special linking
requirements. Some commands have been removed completely.
They usually have the same cat/subcat until a major
feature changes such as going to Dual Band.

Dave, seeing how it's been over a year since the 2.1.4b
came out, I was wondering if there was any news on the next
version's progress. For the most part, everything is
working fine, but I always get all giddy over new releases!

So, fully understanding that #1, you are a busy guy and #2
you have a bug(s) that's holding up the next version, is
it possible to get an Alpha version? I've got a couple
keypads that need to be configured beyond what I can do
without software.
Could we *maybe* have an Alpha version that could be used
for testing (and KPL Config) but not as a live system?
Pretty please?

Dave, for the record I am not trying to be pushy. My PH installation is working great. But I always
get all squishy and excited when new stuff is on the horizon. I don't mind waiting for it. That being
said, if you need testers, I would like to offer my services as well. Bottom line though, take your
time.

An update on 2.1.5...
The lockup requiring a reboot bug that Ive been fighting for months appears to finally be fixed. It was tracked down to the new multi-threading model and resulted from a conflict of simultaneous access to resources.
With that finally done, two things remain before I'll have a version ready to release. The first is the labeling system. I was partially done with it and was going to release as is until I discovered that some basic core functionality was being blocked. As such, it was easier to just finish up the labeling basics than trying to remove it all together for this release. The second item is to add the support for the Insteon motion sensor configuration since I had forgotten about getting that part included.
Since there have been several requests of an alpha, I will go ahead and release this version as soon as I have it compilable. This will mean that the change log, help file, database upgrade, and installer will not yet be ready. This alpha will need to be manually installed and you'll essentially have to start with an empty database in order to test with but should give you an idea of what will be available with the beta. I'll then release the rest of the items as I get them completed. The first will be the changelog, followed by the help file, and then finally the database upgrade utility. The last step will be to release the complete upgrade as an installable package with all the individual components included.

Jeff,
Both of the referenced issues should be fixed. Specifically the problem with rebuilding of Insteon links and the other I2CS problems. The Insteon engine including the I2CS was completely rewritten for this upcoming release. There may be some new bugs (I hope not) but the current crop of bugs primarily associated with I2CS should have been eliminated .

Ken here Peter.
Just arrived in Ocala, FL a few days ago, and here now until May. Was
just about to contact Dave to see about our annual get together.
If Dave is willing to host us at home again, we should be able to Skype
for awhile. If he doen't have a camera, we can use my iPhone. I figure
if we bring things and make it potluck, then we can minimize any
workload on Dave/Mira.
Other than March 17-28 when we are on a brief cruise to Panama, we
are good for a gathering.
Hope your schedule is open.
I've been working for months to rewrite as many of the PH Help files as
possible. I've been adding copious examples to each, in the hope it will
help new PH Users have an easier time getting started.
Also been writing FAQ pages to share many of the marvelous tips that
Dave, and others in the Forum have revealed and I was afraid might
get lost over time. I have built a collection of these FAQs over the
years and have found them very valuable. It seemed like a good time
to share them. :-)
Hopefully these wriiteups can get incorporated in the next PH release.

I knew those old quotes would come back sooner or later. What took you so long to get to Florida? Looks like you've been busy while locked in this winter. Your cruise is taking place while I'll be in the area so anytime would be fine. Pot luck won't work because of the distance but then again I don't consume much.
