As promised, the Help file is finished! Not done done but should be adequate for the 2.1.5 release. All functions have been documented and some of them even have examples. I want to make a special thanks to Ken B (GadgetGuy on the forum) for working on the Help files and adding many of the wonderful examples.

I invite all to review the file and let me know of any errors (I know they exist) or any glaring omissions. If there is something you need documented, please let me know so I can get it added before the release.

Ive created both a .chm file and a printable pdf file. You can get the zip of them here: http://www.power-home.com/download/ph-help.zip

Dave.

Dave- The .chm file seems to be empty. The table of
contents appears in the left frame but every document I
attempted to open was blank.

The PDF file is OK.

Ken,

Not sure what would be wrong. After seeing your post, I downloaded the file to my work computer and the CHM is working for me.

I would give re-downloading a try. If that doesnt work, what OS are you running and version of IE?

Dave.

Dave I"m on Windows 7 Home Premium with all the latest
service paks and updates.

I'm using IE 11.0.9600.17126 (which is supposedly the
latest)

I get the same results with the latest version of Google
Chrome.

I downloaded the files again but got the same (non)
results.

Ken,

When I get home tonight, I'll try on Windows 7 Professional and Window 8.1 Enterprise. Not sure what version of IE I have so will check that as well.

The version of Chrome should have no effect since the Microsoft Help system is directly tied to IE.

My filesize on the CHM is 2653KB. Just wondering if your size is something different.

Also, if anyone else is having this problem, please let me know.

Dave.

Windows 7 Pro, I initially get the same problem...index
works but doesn't display any documents. Plus you
probably get a security warning opening it.

The fix is to right click and select "Properties" and
then at the bottom select "Un-Block". Windows is setting
security on it because it's a downloaded file and making
it have wonky behavior.

Dave, I'd assume that you install file won't have the
same problem.

Side note, SUPER excited to be running this live!

Travis,

Appreciate the feedback . Not sure why it didnt give me any problems when I downloaded it (Windows 7 Enterprise) but it definitely makes sense. Im also hoping that the installed version won't have this issue.

Thanks,

Dave.

While I'm thinking of it, just a couple thoughts...

My test setup is a Serial PLM (2413SH), a couple V6.9 SL
and 1 V7.0 KPL.

A few minor things first:

When I added a couple devices that I've got setup to
bench test this, they were both added as a number. (48
and 49.) After a re-init, they came up with proper
names, the the SW didn't have proper settings. I'm
guessing that your DB isn't up to date and will be for
production. (FYI, from devices: 2477D, V6.9, 1247 and
2334-222, Rev 7.0, 0414)

On the sliders (at least some of them, eg: Config 2E of a
SwitchLink) when you click in the area to either side,
the indicator moves in marge blocks *BUT* the value
doesn't change. If you click and hold the indicator it
works just like you'd expect. It's not really a problem
once you figure that out.

On a SW, on the config tab, it appears that the LED
Off/LED On are reversed. When I select "LED On" my light
goes off and vice versa. Also, any chance we'll be able
to control brightness? (FYI, from device: 2477D, V6.9,
1247)

**EDIT** Apparently the behavior below only happens if
"Link Scan" is enabled. I turned it off and now it seems
to work fine.

Finally, the most significant. I was experimenting with
adding scenes from the SLs to the KPL. My first was to
setup 4 scenes on buttons 3-6. I setup them all up and
saved and it was perfect. Everything worked as expected.
But, what I have discovered is that if you change
anything it all gets whacked out. For example, I had a
scene on button 3 (AKA B3) that set D Level to 125, and
B4 to 255. Everything worked. I changed B3 to 200 and
now I have 2 rows for each group 3 and 4.   Group 3 is
still D Level 125 and for each button I have 2 rows: one
row with controller "Verified" and Responder "Link Not
Found" AND one row with controller "Link Not Found" and
Responder "Verified"

That's it. My ph-help.chm file now works perfectly!

Good find Travis

Travis,

Really appreciate the feedback .

1. I made some changes so that the Insteon Type should populate automatically when one is dynamically created. In the current software, you shouldnt have to reinit, just close the Insteon Explorer and reopen and it should have the proper nomenclature and not just a number. This change should cause the changes to be immediate without having to close/reopen.

Concerning the Insteon types not having proper settings, can you give me some more details? For this version of PowerHome, Ive included the full Insteon product list as published to SDK owners by SmartHome so that when a new device is discovered, it will do a lookup in this table and copy the information to the Insteon types table. It should populate the description, subcat, devcat, etc. but will have default values for the colors, text, send and receive groups, memtop, etc.

2. Ive corrected the problem with the sliders when clicking in the page up / page down mode.

3. Took me a while to find a switch that supported turning the LED on/off but I have confirmed your findings. I reversed them so they should now be correct.

Some of the config screens do support brightness and if PH detects the switch type as supporting it, it should show it. I have not found any documentation on how to control brightness for devices that I dont currently detect as supported.

4. Concerning the KPL becoming messed up with the links, you're correct if link scan is turned off it should be fine. Are you able to confirm though than when you have link scan enabled that the error is reproducible or was it a one time occurrence.

Anyways, awesome job testing for me. Anything I can do to correct issues before 2.1.5 is rolled out is a huge plus.

Dave.

Just wanted to post an update on the Database Upgrade utility.

Its been basically kicking my butt since the weekend but I think I finally got it licked. The big issue/problem that Ive had to deal with is that versions prior to 2.1.5 use an Adaptive Server Anywhere 7 database. Version 2.1.5 uses a SQL Anywhere 11 database. Both of these engines cant be active at the same time so the current methodology Ive been using for updating the database will not work. I thought I had finally figured it out but on further testing I was seeing some data corruption.

Tonight though I went at it again and I think Ive finally got it working properly. Its slower than previous versions because it has to connect first to one database and then the other back and forth for each table but my testing so far looks good. I should be able to finish up tomorrow and then its on to the final step...creating the install file.

The KeyPad didn't show up with the Keypad checkbox
checked and the controllers/responders was still set to
1, but maybe I just needed to reset it. All the stuff I
was testing with is fairly current versions (nothing is
more than 6 months old. I should probably test with the
stuff that's in my house, some of which is like 7 years
old, but I'm not messing with my live setup. :))

I'll try and take a look at it again this weekend and get
back to you.

Hmmm...I know that the version of the SwitchLink
allows you to change the level. Are you storing that
info in the DB? Maybe it's the same problem as the
Keypad and it's not looking up that it's supported?

4. Concerning the KPL becoming messed up with the links,
you're correct if link scan is turned off it should be
fine. Are you able to confirm though than when you have
link scan enabled that the error is reproducible or was
it a one time occurrence.

I got it to happen several times in a row. It seems
that it's fine with link scan on, but the moment you
change something (add a new link, edit the on level, etc)
it gets crazied up. What's interesting is that when the
lick scan is on and you edit the "On Level" it doesn't
look like the command it's running is "Edit Level", but
rather it's deleting the link and recreating it.

Anyways, awesome job testing for me. Anything I can do to
correct issues before 2.1.5 is rolled out is a huge plus.

I'm happy to test. FYI, I love the new options menu
on the devices. I think that's a great way to go.
Overall everything looks really good.

I'll probably play with it a bit more this weekend, but
let me know if there is anything specific you want
tested.

Dave,

Having managed upgrades a number of times, I can tell you that most people really don't care how long it takes to do an upgrade as long as you have messages that tell them that something is happening and they can see progress. Maybe show counters or a progress bar. It's not like this process is performed daily, it's only done (hopefully) once. I would offer not to worry about the duration of the upgrade.

We all appreciate all your efforts!

Few more notes...
I added a couple more SLs that are varying ages (A few
2477Ds, with firmware from 39 to 55)

In every case I still don't see the ability to control
the LED Brightness (Which makes sense for some devies
{eg: the 2477D that's firmware 39. I think that's >6
years old and doesn't support that}). I assume that
would be on the "Config 2E" page like it is for the KPL.
Maybe I am misunderstanding and that's still not an
option.

FYI, there are 2 different devices that I added that
created new types. Both created the new type and got the
names and engine correct (I2CS):
2334-222 Keypad Dimmer (Dual Band)
Revision 7.0 0414
The Type it created: Devcat 1, Subcat 65, Prodkey:
<blank>
As far as I can tell, all I did to get it to work all the
way correctly is check the "KeypadLinc" and change Ctlr
and Resp groups to 8.

2477D Switchlinc Dimmer (Duad-Band)
Revision 6.9 1247
The Type it created: Devcat 1, Sub Cat 32, Prodkey:
<blank>

This one seems to work 100% correct (other than I don't
see the ability to adjust led brightness)

Travis,

Have an update on the LED brightness. I searched all of my available documentation and...I found it! Actually, I found multiple conflicting info but after quite a few test runs Ive located the proper commands that work on my devices that support this feature.

Basically, its part of the Config 2E screen so if you don't have that screen, you can adjust the brightness. Even if 2E is supported, it *may* not work for some devices. Ive got a SwitchLinc that supports extended 2E commands but just won't allow me to change the brightness. On all my other devices that Ive tested (that support 2E), I was able to successfully change brightness. So changes have been made and 2.1.5 will have this feature.

Will report back on other issues as I get more info.

Awesome! Happy to try it out if you want to compile a
new version.

Travis,

Ok, went in and modified my internal table of Insteon type configuration and added columns for controller groups, responder groups, and flags. The current method just defaults the groups to 1 and 1 and only sets the dimmable flag. SmartHome doesnt include this info in their Insteon product list so I just filled the new values as best I could. Controller groups, responder groups, and the KPL, PowerLinc, Dimmable, and ControlLinc flags should now be properly set.

I don't think I'll be able to get a testable version out before the actual release as the database and version numbers have all been updated for the actual release.

After I check the issue with KPL links becoming messed up, I'll be working on the installer which Im hoping wont take too long.

Dave.
