No matter what I do - this device only seems to report in when plugged in. Since I don't want to continually plug it in while trying to figure out my cabinet temperature, I have moved to "Plan B", which is to use the indoor sensor from an old weather station (which you may have picked up on in another thread). This ultimately worked really gracefully, and the algorithm for tuning the cabinet temperature is in tuning (I need to see what "normal" temps are to tune it up, so am monitoring those now).
I want to thank you all for the immense amount of time you put into this, and how much help you gave. If someone comes up with a "clean" method for using one of these, I may revisit it someday. In the mean time, my alternative is at least getting me off the ground so I can move on to my next project.
I am more interested in someone using one of the low-volt Insteon controls (or similar) with an external temperature sensor...has anyone had any luck with that?
...and while I'm asking, here's another hypothetical question for you: What seems to be the most frequently-used, most reliable, and most realistic (price and ease) in regards to multi-zone temp sensing...?
