When is sunrise in your area? If it occurs around sunrise then it’s probably related to noise activity from the motion detector. The reason you are not seeing the frequency may be due to the fact scan is off. I have had occurrences of scan causing an Insteon device as well as X10 inadvertently coming on. Experts will say probability of it affecting Insteon is rare BUT I have experience it. I run with Scan unchecked and also Enable Pending unchecked and I do not see random lights coming on.
Lee, sometime in my Event Log I find strange entries when the noise level gets loud. One that I see is “unmapped”. I posted one a while back and you looked at it and we didn’t have a definitive answer but I believe it was due to noise. I usually can reproduce it by moving my Access Points around. BTW, I am about 85% CFLs and this occurred long before I installed them.

Sunrise: 6:22 am dawn at 5:54 am The only reason I don't really go for this is that the pantry light is normally on between 12-2am (if I get up to use the bathroom, I'll go check on it).
Pete, you are right on! There were NO unmapped commands last night at all. I usually have 1-2 every hour at night. They usually comes from a device and is sent to the PLM as an unmapped command. Sometimes these commands include "thermostat status" or "door status" - which is odd since I don't use those functions. Some also say "Peek Address" and "Set Addr MSB." Most just say "Unmapped command." I don't think there are more at night, but they are easier to see in the event log because there is little other activity.
Unfortunately, there are also no unmapped or random commands which appear in the event log during the time frame when the pantry light turned on early this morning.

Well the reason the Event Log will not show them is because they cannot be interpreted. I have seen all those you listed. So maybe you have the same problem I have. Let’s let it play out a little longer and gather more info on it. I wish I still had my scope I used years ago working on mainframes then I could isolate it right down. I have in the past used X10 tools like line monitors but the scope would be the best way I think.

Some further info that may be helpful...
Background Insteon commands are automatically filtered from the eventlog. Anything that would normally appear in the "Pending Operations" window *should not* show in the event log (they will show in the raw Insteon log however).
Timed Events...to get a frequency less that hourly, just type the number of minutes in the frequency field. When you select "Hourly", it actually puts a 60 in this field. So you can actually make ANY frequency you want as long as the resolution is in minutes.
Most likely what the problem with the switch is is a bad config. Ive had switches that did the darndest things for NO apparent reason. Peeking the memory to try to find what might be causing it would yield nothing. Easiest fix is usually to just to a factory reset, verify that the switch has no links, etc., and then have PowerHome "Rebuild" the links from the links tab. This has always worked for me to remove these "flaky" unexplainable problems.
HTH,
Dave.
